This reversal of fortune eclipses any possible merger or acquisition in the States. Flightglobal’s worldly globetrotter, Kieran Daly, discusses this week with Airline Business's Left Field here, and you can hear more Left Field here and read more here. Kieran also gives some insight into the recent performance of EADS, the parent company of Airbus.

The US administration has accepted Pakistan’s request to use counter-terrorism funds to finance the mid-life upgrades of Pakistan’s aging F-16 fighter planes. So far, the United Stats has released $116 million, but Pakistan will receive a total of $474 million, for this purpose. Under normal circumstances counter-terrorism funds are not used for buying such weapons, but the Bush administration made an exception for Pakistan because it wants to help, “a strong ally faced with a difficult financial situation.” These mid-life updates will bring the older Pakistani aircrafts to the same level of technology as the current models, which are capable of precision close air strikes, non-traditional intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance. After the updates are complete, Pakistan will also be able to employ F-16s for night-time operations.

Routes out of the airline's most important hub in Zurich were also narrowed, by 28%. And not only on the European network. The intercontinental network has been reduced by the same degree too. Previously, we pointed out that the feeder flights were causing headache, so why is there a cut on the intercontinental routes too? As mentioned, Swiss wanted to become less reliant from the feeder flights, that's still valid. But to do so, they reduced the intercontinental routes too, to concentrate on the more important origin and destination traffic out of Switzerland.
If a passenger is flying Vienna-Zurich-New York at a cheaper price than the passenger who booked Zurich-New York, it is no question which one is more important to the airline. Swiss International's priority is on customers which are flying out of Zurich.
With less feeder flights out of Europe, the airline cannot expect the same number of transcontinental passengers. A reduction was therefore necessary. The long haul fleet (MD-11, A340 and A330) has been reduced by 8 planes, from 26 to 18. But almost no intercontinental destination was completely withdrawn, expect of very few. Teheran was one of them. And Beijing, where Swiss didn't restart operations after flights were halted due the SARS threat. The airline has reduced frequencies on many destinations, and the utilisation of the remaining planes has been improved in order to keep the network with less equipment.
Cancelling destinations is always a risky task, especially if you would like to transport business class passengers. If you take too many frequencies away, the route will no longer be interesting for those high-yield passengers. A route with only four frequencies per week is not that interesting if Lufthansa is pulling in with double daily flights at the same time. A business passenger will most likely chose the flight according to the most convenience schedule.
Swiss didn't axe a lot of frequencies, some destinations lost one flight per week, most of them will be adjusted according to seasonal demand. But in the end, the passengers will decide whether they like the new schedule.

enjoy travel to zurich switzerland
Zürich is world-renowned for its extremely high-quality public transit system. It has one of the highest levels of per capita transit ridership in the world—no mean feat when one considers that it also has one of the highest levels of per capita income. People in Zürich are definitely "choice" riders, and the city's public transit system is good enough to attract them.
This article describes Zürich's urban transport system: a combination of trams and buses, its regional rail system (and connecting local buses), and finally how the two systems work together to provide outstanding regional transport service.

Working in Australia has just become easier thanks to a reciprocal visa agreement between the United States and Australia.
The new Australian Work and Holiday visa, which went into effect October 31, 2007, is allowing American visitors aged 18 to 30 to travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months, and to work for one employer for up to six months. Whereas citizens of the commonwealth countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada have had a relatively easy time working in Australia, Americans were much more restricted until now.
The timing couldn’t be better. The labor shortage in Australia means there is a desperate need for hospitality and tourism workers, and opportunities abound in Australia’s warm tropical north.
For tourism job prospects year round, head to Cairns, Australia’s most northern city and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Many dive boats, restaurants, and youth hostels depend on the influx of international travelers to operate their businesses. The ability to speak Japanese or German is highly regarded, with French, Chinese, and Korean coming in a close second. Don’t forget that farms on the outskirts of Cairns are also perpetually short-staffed at harvest (which is not necessarily in autumn). This leaves an abundance of higher-paying, albeit more strenuous, positions open for working travelers.
As with the dress in the tropical north, applying for short-term jobs is more casual than what you may be used to. Don’t bother trying to set up a job before arriving in Australia because potential employers like to get the look of you first. When I got a job at a youth hostel, my employer barely glanced at my resume but instead preferred to have a long chat about life. As with job hunting elsewhere, however, it is important to be on time to an interview, have a well-groomed appearance, and to have a copy of a professional-looking resume. Also be aware that if you are interested in bartending, you will be expected to have an RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol). This certificate is easily attainable by attending a one-evening course at the local TAFE College or other institutions.
To find a job in Cairns, try the following resources:
The Newspaper. You may think it a bit old-fashioned, but employers still favor the local newspaper, The Cairns Post, to announce job vacancies. You can find postings every day, but for the best selection buy a Saturday paper. Send in your resume as requested, and then unless stated otherwise call the potential employer about two days later. Don’t wait for a potential employer to contact you. It is acceptable and sometimes expected that you follow up with a polite inquiry call on the status of the hiring process.
Notice Boards. Almost all youth hostels have notice boards, and employers who seek young people for short-term or seasonal work use these boards to get the word out. I simply chatted with the owner of the place at which I was staying, which then led to a job. For a listing of Cairns hostels, see www.cairnshostels.com. You will also find a major notice board on Abbott Street outside of Global Gossip Internet cafe, which often has job postings in addition to apartment share requests.
Cairns Backpacker Express. This is a free magazine that you can pick up at hostels and on free-standing magazine racks throughout town that occasionally posts job vacancies.
Dive Shops. There are four dive schools in Cairns, and all of them teach SCUBA diving year-round. Occasionally there are job openings at the school itself, but you are likely to have better luck finding a job as a “hostie.” Hosties work on the boats that go out on day trips and overnight, and she or he is responsible for anything from food preparation to helping guests with their fins and snorkels. The best way to get a job on a boat is to contact one of the schools directly, or even walk in. Here are a few:

This saves you 2-3 weeks of time familiarizing yourself with the local scene and job market.
Positions and start dates are limited. To reserve your placement, click here.
Eligibility:
* 18 - 30 years old

Duration: Up to one year.
Start dates: Throughout the year
What you get:
Accommodations: Your first two nights at a local youth hostel are included. This is a great way to meet new people and settle in.
Salary: Working a typical 40-hour week in Australia in an unskilled position, you can expect to make around $500-$700 AUD per week. This is based on earnings of approximately $15-$17 per hour for a 40 hour work week, which is a gross wage before taxes. Due to the high tax rate for people that come to Australia on a 416 visa or Working Holiday Maker visa, the net wages are closer to $400 - $500 AUD per week (approximately $368 - $460 USD). We cannot guarantee any specific wage, as with all jobs, pay varies depending on the industry, the location, your skills and the current demand for workers. The salary relationship is entirely between you and the employer.
Orientation: You will have an in-country orientation arranged for you upon your arrival. During orientation you will be introduced to Australia, be given advice about finding work and housing, as well as meet new people. The location of your orientation is within minutes of your hostel.
Visa Assistance: The Work and Holiday and the Working Holiday visas allow you to work and travel in Australia for up to 1 year. On the Working Holiday visa, you will need to change jobs every 6 months. All participants are responsible for applying for their visa and for any additional visa fees. Upon arrival in Australia, you may be asked to provide evidence that you have access to sufficient funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your stay in Australia. Generally, AUD5,000 may be regarded as sufficient, but the amount may vary depending on your length of stay and the extent of your travel. You should also be able to provide proof of a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia. Evidence may include a certified copy of a bank statement and an air ticket out of Australia.

world famous city london
London has captured the imagination of the world since the Romans set up camp there around 43 C.E. After their fall, various Celtic tribes, as well as the Angles and the Saxons, moved in and made the city their own. The English language as we know it today is the result of both the Germanic tongue of these Anglo-Saxons and French used after the Norman invasions of 1066.
Whatever the derivation of the English language, it has been the basis of some of the most important feats of literary achievement in the history of mankind. From Shakespeare to Shaw and from Dickens to Woolf, the expressiveness and range of the English language has proven to be the perfect medium for conveying the nature of the human condition when pen is put to paper. And the city of London itself has proven to be the perfect setting for some of the most memorable stories ever told-a testament to its inspirational power.
But the history of London is about far more than literature, and the present is just as impressive as its past. Today, London is one of the world's cultural and political centers, and what happens in this city often reverberates around the world. Many critics of popular and high culture, in fact, believe that modern London is the place to live and study for those wishing to keep their fingers on the pulse of the Western world. Writers like Ian McEwan, Martin Amis and Kazuo Ishiguro, artists like Damien Hirst and Abigail Lane and even chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, have all made London a center of their creative lives. And what they have done in London has affected people across the globe.
Consequently, a semester or a year in London can prove to be a life-changing experience for students. The city itself is not only famous for its superb universities, but also for the number of enthusiastic and ambitious students living and studying in the city today. As a result, students from all over the world are drawn to London, and studying abroad there is just as much an international experience as it is a British one.
From the many colleges of the University of London to King's College London to London Metropolitan University, thousands and thousands of students receive their education in the city each year. Many of these schools are centrally located so you can walk out of class and be five minutes from St. Paul's Cathedral or Covent Garden's charming street entertainers. You may be able to enroll directly or pursue a study abroad program that operates in partnership with one of these British universities.
In addition to the study options, there are numerous internship opportunities in the city. Many multi-national companies are based in London, so the possibilities are almost endless. Organizations will help you find a placement in the industry that interests you, allowing you to combine your studies with real career experience. And the good news for you is that you don't have to learn a new language to take advantage of the excellent education and career opportunities available in London.
For students who want to understand the culture from which much of the West comes, as well as for those who yearn to be in the middle of all the most exciting developments in our modern world, London is the perfect place to study.

world best and cheap hotels
Cheap Connecticut hotels are easy to come by for travelers who would like to save some money on their vacation. New England vacationers like the affordability of accommodations because it allows them to spend their money on other things, such as visiting popular attractions. However large or small your budget may be, there are cheap Connecticut hotels to meet your needs. Finding a discount hotel does not mean that the quality of the hotel will be low. In fact, some cheap Connecticut hotels offer free continental breakfasts, clean and comfortable rooms, and amenities such as pools and Jacuzzis.
Connecticut budget hotels can usually be found in the suburbs or outlying areas of cities such as Mystic and Hartford. If your Connecticut discount hotel ends up being too far away from area attractions, renting a car can also be an affordable option to complete your experience.
The Lighthouse Inn is one of the many Connecticut budget hotels in New London where guests can expect modern amenities such as an outdoor swimming pool, high speed internet access, and help with transportation all at an affordable price. What is unique about this Connecticut discount hotel is its beautiful location right on the Long Island Sound. There is even a private beach for those travelers who have had enough of the crowds at Ocean Side Park. After a day at the beach, guests can relax in hotel salon or rent a bicycle to leisurely explore the city of New London. The Lighthouse Inn prices start at $75 and go up from there depending on the view of the Sound that the room provides.
Finding a discount hotel in areas with major tourist attractions is easy because there is such a wide range of choices. If you are visiting the Mystic area and are planning on visiting the major tourist attractions like the Mystic aquarium, the area is full of discount hotels. For under $100, you can rent a room at the Colonial style Adams House in Mystic. The hotel features antique fireplaces in a few of the bedroom as well as private bathrooms and a charming English style flower garden. The best part about the hotel is the deluxe breakfast offered every morning at no additional charge. For fabulous fall scenery and a reduction in price, try staying at the Adams House in September or October. Since the bed and breakfast is small and is close to tourist attractions, booking a room a couple months early is a good idea.
The Goodwin Inn in Hartford is another inexpensive Connecticut hotel with style. Located in downtown Hartford across from the Old State House and the New England Dodge Music Center, the hotel is decorated with marble tiles and deluxe furnishings. There is even a Champagne social hour every weekday evening that allows guests to socialize while listening to a selection of piano music. Guests can unwind from a long day of sightseeing by enjoying the hotel’s fitness center. The hotel is located in close proximity to major Hartford attractions such as the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum and the famous Bushnell Park.
Finding cheap Connecticut hotels can be easy if you follow a few simple steps. Try taking advantage of one of the free customer savings programs that many of the Connecticut budget hotels offer as a free service. These cards will give you points every time stay at certain hotels and offer discounts for staying at certain partner hotels. The points add up quickly if you travel often, and oftentimes the points can be transferred into airline miles for your next vacation. It is also a good idea to call the hotels directly and ask what their rates are at the time you are traveling. Most Connecticut discount hotel chains have nightly prices that fluctuate, so calling often will assure that you get the best rate. Cheap Connecticut hotels can often be had for those that are savvy at finding package deals in Connecticut. Travel companies can save you a significant of money by bundling airfare and hotel prices together.
With the abundance of Connecticut discount hotel chains in the New England area; most travelers who are resourceful and persistent in getting the best value for their money won’t have problems finding Connecticut budget hotels that fit their needs.

travel to europe
Amsterdam is often called the “used camper lot of Europe.” Your home is right there, food can be stored and cooked on the stove and low-cost campgrounds are everywhere. We were fortunate in finding a company that specialized in retrofitting VW busses into vans with stove, sink, refrigerator and fold-away bed (very comfy), ours even came equipped with a sunroof. During a year traversing Europe from top to bottom and side to side in a used VW camper, my wife and I met so many of these wonderful young travelers, sharing ideas on beating the system. But, no matter how you do it, travel in Europe need not cost you an arm and a leg and curtail your planned itinerary.
Amsterdam is a traveler’s delight, full of inexpensive food of all kinds. Young people from all over the world flock to this exciting city for a number of reasons, one being the turn-around for those looking for inexpensive vehicles. Hanging out at the American Express office, those returning home easily find buyers for their car/van. We discovered a company that bought used VW busses and had a carpenter build a complete camper interior.
Food, next to gasoline, is the most money-consuming item for the budget traveler. Supermarkets and large neighborhood markets offer everything you can find in U.S. markets — and, sometimes, much more. Some even offer the purchase of a new moped, load up the groceries and putt-putt back to the campground. To conserve on the cost of gasoline (petrol) we would pick a destination no more than a day’s travel and after settling into a campsite, we’d use local transportation, which is extraordinary almost everywhere in Europe.
If you are fond of traveling or you plan to spend a nice vacation with your family, then Europe is definitely the place for your needs. Europe has all the arrangements for adventure vacation, golfing holiday and winter sports. Europe has a varying topography from rising mountains and glaciers to lowlands, from oceans, beaches, harbors to lakes, from beautiful forests, flora and fauna to stunning grasslands. Europe also manifests deep roots of culture and history with stunning architecture, sculptures, art work, folk music, operas, theatres, and galleries. What more do you want to have a memorable vacation!
Planning trips to Europe with kids and family is simple. All you need to do is to find a suitable vacation package to suit your needs. You can find a great budgeted vacation package on the internet with ease. If you go through the map of Europe, you will be confused. There’s so much to visit that trips to Europe are no jokes. It is almost impossible to travel the entire place in the span of one vacation itself. Time and money are two very important factors required to budget your vacation to Europe. You can also opt for a eurail or inter rail passes to save unnecessary expenditure. These passes will let your travel all over the place for a certain number of fixed days. This way you will not have to expend on your travel expenses again and again. Rail travel will also help you to have the real essence of Europe’s natural beauty. You will take less time to travel large distances.
Where do you want to begin your journey from? Now, that’s the big question!
Begin your journey from London and you can have a happy ending at Paris, Vienna, Athens or Amsterdam. If you are visiting Europe, you just can’t ignore famous cities like Rome, London and Paris. You may take three to four days for the inter country travelling. But try to spend most of your time in these cities i.e. at least 5 days per country. You might face some language problem while traveling. Most European countries use English as their medium of communication.
Do not make hasty decision. Believe in quality and not quantity. If you visit a country for one or two days in order to rush to the other country, then you will surly lose on something really amazing about that country. Try and stick to your plans only. But be open to changes and new events.
Europe is one of the seven traditional continents of Earth. The westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, it is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the southeast by the Caucasus Mountains, the Black Sea and the waterways connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. To the east, Europe is generally divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, and by the Caspian Sea.
Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface. It hosts a large number of sovereign states (ca. 50), whose precise amount depends on the underlying definition of Europe's border, as well as on the in- or exclusion of semi-recognized states. Of all European countries, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa with a population of 710,000,000 or about 11% of the world's population. However, Europe's borders and population are in dispute, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one.
Europe is the birthplace of Western culture. European nations played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonization. By the 17th and 18th centuries European nations controlled most of Africa, the Americas, and large portions of Asia. World War I and World War II led to a decline in European dominance in world affairs as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. The Cold War between those two superpowers divided Europe along the Iron Curtain. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
